Dyson 360 Eye Robotic Vacuum

September 04, 2014 by dit in Abode, Tech

The problem so far with robotic vacuums it that, frankly, they've been terrible vacuums. The challenge is jamming enough cleaning power into a small form factor, so much so that it has taken Dyson 16 years and tens of millions of dollars to achieve a solution. This is where the Dyson 360 Eye (~$1200) comes in. Dyson has developed their own unique digital motor to accommodate power demands and the company hasn't stopped at just power. The bot has a full 360 degree sensor system that maps your rooms and uses key points to guide its tank track driven self around your abode in the most efficient pattern - even if that requires driving over a change in surfaces. The only issue is that you'll have to sack your cleaning service just to pay for it.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

January 16, 2013 by mak in Whips

In late 1953 the original Corvette was launched showing that American auto makers could build a vehicle to compete with the European and Italian standards of that day. Proving itself once agin, the 2014 Corvette Stingray ($TBA) marks the seventh generation of the Corvette family and displays the mark of the Stingray due to GM claiming it to be the best Vette ever. Not only is this Vette lighter, with an aluminum frame, carbon hood and removable top, they have upped the power to 450 horsepower and 450 foot pound of torque allowing for a 0-60 under four seconds and 1G of cornering g-force. Sales start this Fall and prices are said to be about the same as the current model.

Bell & Ross Aviation Series

December 04, 2012 by dit in Threads, Gear

Professional use has always been at the heart of Bell & Ross watches. Nestled snuggly in the Swiss watch-making tradition, the time pieces are designed and engineered to withstand the harsh environments that these unique professionals encounter. Astronauts, elite police, submariners, military pilots, race car drivers, and underwater bomb-disposal experts rely on Bell & Ross watches to withstand the extremes of temperature, violent accelerations, and dangerous pressures. With its square casing the company's Aviation Series ($2,300+) has quite good looks to compliment all that function. The watches are available in a variety of materials including classic stainless steel, carbon fiber, and ceramic. The mechanical movement has been called a "living organ", and is a masterpiece of ingenuity, symbolizing several centuries of human and watch-making history. Maybe you don't fall into the "extreme professionals" category, but surely you can appreciate a superbly crafted tool.

Telluride Helitrax

Helitrax
October 06, 2012 by dit in Travel

Let us guess... you have suddenly come into two thousand dollars and MUST spend it by next March? What will get you the most fun for your buck? Helisking/boarding is a pretty darn good bet. Telluride Helitrax has one of the best reputations you can find and provides an opportunity to ride some of the most exquisite powder in the US. So, if you are in Colorado why not pass this up? Their runs exist in the 10,000-13,000 foot range (awesome) and in each run you can expect to drop about 3,000 feet in elevation (even more awesome). One of the best days of your life (~$1,025) includes 6+ runs, lunch, and gear if you need it. If you are in Vail or Aspen Helitrax can even fly you out to Telluride and have you back before dinner (because friends don't let friends drive I-70). Why not go ten?

Marantz TT-15S1

September 28, 2012 by dit in Gear, Abode

Instead of accepting analog audio as a thing of the past Marantz has used the advent of digital media as a higher bar that turntables must simply now meet. In pursuit of this goal lies the TT-15S1 ($1500). To get there, Marantz has used an AC servo, an endless silicon belt-drive system, and a low-coloration aluminum tone arm. It is also undeniably one of the best looking turntables you will lay eyes on for a long time to come.

Formlabs Form 1

September 28, 2012 by dit in Gear, Tech

The day of accessible digital fabrication has truly arrived. No longer are designers, engineers, and creators at the mercy of expensive and complex equipment.  The Form 1 (~$3000) developed by Formlabs delivers just this - professional quality 3D printing at a real world price point. Consumer grade 3D printers have been on the market for awhile now, but the Form 1 is leagues ahead of the others. What sets it apart from the competition is its ease of use and the fact that the Form 1 uses stereolithography (SL) printing technology to produce much more detailed and accurate objects.
