Bell & Ross Aviation Series

December 04, 2012 by dit in Threads, Gear

Professional use has always been at the heart of Bell & Ross watches. Nestled snuggly in the Swiss watch-making tradition, the time pieces are designed and engineered to withstand the harsh environments that these unique professionals encounter. Astronauts, elite police, submariners, military pilots, race car drivers, and underwater bomb-disposal experts rely on Bell & Ross watches to withstand the extremes of temperature, violent accelerations, and dangerous pressures. With its square casing the company's Aviation Series ($2,300+) has quite good looks to compliment all that function. The watches are available in a variety of materials including classic stainless steel, carbon fiber, and ceramic. The mechanical movement has been called a "living organ", and is a masterpiece of ingenuity, symbolizing several centuries of human and watch-making history. Maybe you don't fall into the "extreme professionals" category, but surely you can appreciate a superbly crafted tool.

Allen Edmonds Long Branch

October 23, 2012 by dit in Threads

Cold weather is beginning to set in and that means it's time to break out the boots. This pair comes from Allen Edmonds. The Long Branch ($350) model captures their brand quite well. Stemming form the company's popular Dalton boot, the Long Branch incorporates a more purposeful Vibram sole making it a true boot. The greatest thing about Allen Edmonds is their commitment to craft- ALL of their shoes are still hand made in the USA. Furthermore, when you've really beat the shoes up after years of use you can send them back to be completely rebuilt for a small price. This boot may be just as happy in the boardroom as the workshop. Sustainability, meet Tradition.

Suunto Elementum

October 15, 2012 by dit in Threads, Gear

It is no secret that Suunto watches have been helping people accomplish pretty amazing feats for quite some time now. However, up to this point they have been bulky, large, plastic, and a bit nerdy. This left many longing for a capable watch that could be worn everyday. Now, the line of Suunto Elementum watches (~$900) are the only products in this niche- and they are indeed capable. The trio (Aqua, Terra, Ventus) boast features that include: altimeter, barometer, 3D compass, water sensor, depth gauges, various chronographs and more. The real accomplishment though, lies in their looks- with a choice of wrist band styles, the body is no longer plastic and not screaming, "I'm a wrist-top computer".

October 06, 2012 by dit in Threads, Gear

It is officially that time of year where we are all craving snow like mad people... Hence, our first winter post. Feast your eyes on the all new Dragon APX Goggle (~$180). At first glance they are, well, massive really. This is pretty much as close as you can get to wearing a full on fighter jet helmet. The massive lens equates to unparalleled peripheral vision. The goggles feature armor plated venting, cushy padding, and they come in a wide range of styles. Developed and tested by Dragon's own team of maniacs the APX comes in two lens sizes- massive(APX) and large(APXs).
